Position: Part-time (6 hours/wk.) Advanced EL Civics Adult Education Instructor for immediate fill. 
Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays, 9am-12pm; July 21, 2015 through June 2016 (270 Instructional Hours).*

*This is a grant-funded part-time position: Time frame is dependent upon on grant approvals; applicants should be available to commit to this time line.

Instructor reports to the ESL/English Literacy and Civics Program Coordinator as part of a team of instructors who report to the Director of the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Department. 


  • Minimum education:
    Master’s Degree preferred, Bachelor’s degree required -- in TESL.  Applicants currently enrolled in a TESL Master’s program will be considered.
  • 3-5 years' adult ESL instruction preferred.
  • The instructor will be able to design new and implement current lessons and materials that target the following reading levels: Advanced = High 5th grade – 8th and integrate the following competencies:
  • College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for Adult Education, WEBB’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK), and CASAS assessment competencies.
  • Instructor will create Lesson Plans for cognitively engaging and challenging tasks for the improvement of reading and writing skills.  Instructor will maintain a binder collecting daily typed lesson plans that list align with the CCRS, list DOK levels, and activities/resources with materials used.
  • Strong written, communication, organizational, and computer skills (Word, Excel, CBL/CALL, and Internet); easy to contact my email or phone.
  • Willingness to be trained (time paid) to administer CASAS and/or BEST Literacy tests (free training) and attend PLC/faculty meetings.

Specific Duties:

  • Instruct up to 15 adult learners in the areas of English Literacy and Civics, Citizenship, College and Career Readiness, and Workforce preparation.
  • Work collaboratively with the ESL/EL Civics Program Coordinator to meet program goals.
  • Work with learners on activities related to their individual and collective goals to improve English language skills, and obtain Citizenship, GED, and/or post-secondary education/training.
  • Plan lessons using appropriate adult instructional materials and techniques for developing reading, writing, and critical thinking skills using civics, U.S. government, U.S. history, and citizenship content-based curriculum.
  • Keep organized files & binders documenting class activities, lessons, materials, & student output (quizzes, etc.).
  • Effectively incorporate group activities, technology, and authentic materials into instruction, including weekly computer-based learning in the computer lab (must be “tech savvy”).
  • Promote student engagement and collaboration in learning.
  • Attend Professional Learning Communities (PLC/faculty) meetings FY 2015-16 (approx. 20 hrs. total)
  • Perform related administrative duties: tracking student sign-in sheets; documenting student attendance, academic progress, and facilitating assessments.

Instruction rate: $35.00 per hour ($28/hr. instruction; $7/hr. preparation).
PLC and administration rate: $25.00 per hour.
